Last day in hobart

November 4, 2009

I just lost everything I wrote about our last day! Here I go again.

We drove to Port Arthur today. It’s such a beautiful, picturesque place. More like a holiday destination than a jail. Surely the convicts would have chilled out just by looking at the view between the bars on their cells. It would have been freezing in winter though.

On the drive back we stopped at the Blowhole in pirate’s bay. It wasn’t blowing very hard though. On the way there we passed through Doo Town.

“As you drive through Doo Town you will notice that the inhabitants have named their cottages, or shacks as they are known in Tasmania, with ‘Doo’ names. These interesting names include Thistledoo and Gunnadoo.

The town dates back to the 1930s when in 1935, Hobart architect Eric Round began a custom that continues today. He placed the name plate ‘Doo I’ at his Pirate’s Bay weekender shack. Charles Gibson (Doo-Me) and Bill Eldridge (Doo-Us) followed. The tradition caught on and today most of the town’s 1930s or so cottages have ‘Doo’ names.”

My favourite was ‘Wattle I Doo’.
