Last day in hobart
November 4, 2009
I just lost everything I wrote about our last day! Here I go again.
We drove to Port Arthur today. It’s such a beautiful, picturesque place. More like a holiday destination than a jail. Surely the convicts would have chilled out just by looking at the view between the bars on their cells. It would have been freezing in winter though.
On the drive back we stopped at the Blowhole in pirate’s bay. It wasn’t blowing very hard though. On the way there we passed through Doo Town.
“As you drive through Doo Town you will notice that the inhabitants have named their cottages, or shacks as they are known in Tasmania, with ‘Doo’ names. These interesting names include Thistledoo and Gunnadoo.
The town dates back to the 1930s when in 1935, Hobart architect Eric Round began a custom that continues today. He placed the name plate ‘Doo I’ at his Pirate’s Bay weekender shack. Charles Gibson (Doo-Me) and Bill Eldridge (Doo-Us) followed. The tradition caught on and today most of the town’s 1930s or so cottages have ‘Doo’ names.”
My favourite was ‘Wattle I Doo’.
Last night in hobart

We have just returned from the Drunken Admiral restaurant down on the wharf. We shared the seafood platter and practically rolled out of there. I forget to take a photo of it before it was just a pile of shells. It didn’t take us very long!

Richmond
November 3, 2009
We drove the short distance to Richmond today. It’s amazing how different the landscape is just a short distance from the Hobart CBD. It’s such a cute little town with it’s cute little bridge the oldest in Australia. It’s also home to the oldest catholic church in Australia and one of the oldest jails.
We stopped off for little shopping in Hobart on the way to Granny’s for dinner and saw Bernie at the diamond shop.
Cup Day
November 3, 2009
It’s been a very long time since I have missed a Melbourne cup day, it’s a little weird not having or going to a BBQ. But I’m not complaining as I am enjoying our relaxing holiday. I woke at about 8am to the sound of very heavy rain. Whilst it’s not really what you want on a holiday there was something calming and cosy about it. I’m happy to curl up on the coach for a few hours and read I’m sure it will clear a bit as it’s still early. We were going to drive to Richmond which we still might do and maybe even go see another movie. Tonight we should be catching up with Bernie and Granny.
Monday drive part 2
November 3, 2009
We arrived at the beautiful and tranquil Coles Bay and further along Freycinet. Being the slow coaches we are we left it a bit late to get to crystal bay but we spent time enjoying the beach and rock pools at Coles Bay. I also tried the curried scallop pie which was lovely and fresh and some of the best pastry I’ve ever tasted (thanks for mentioning the scallop pie Jo. I probably wouldn’t have tried it otherwise).
Monday drive part 1
November 3, 2009
Another gorgeous day yesterday (Monday). We took a drive up the east coast heading for Freycinet. Such beautiful landscapes along the way. Everything is so green and alive and very hilly, it’s totally different to going for a country drive in Victoria.
We made a detour into the very small town of Triabunna and came across a very quaint tea room. It was set in a beautifully landscaped garden which you could wander around and enjoy whilst waiting for your scones…and yummy scones they were.
Day of rest
November 1, 2009
Sunday started out very relaxing. After a great nights sleep in the king bed (and the first sleep in a bed since Thursday night) I woke around 9 and enjoyed the sun on the balcony reading until 11 when G got up. We pretty much did the same thing for the next couple of hours then dragged ourselves out of the house to enjoy the sunshine. We drove to Hobart to do some more exlploring. We headed to the wharf (which pretty much comprises of seafood restaurants) and then walked around Salamanca. After thinking it was quiet for a Sunday we found Salamanca square behind the main strip which was buzzing with outdoor cafes and restaurants.
Being the nanas we are we ended up back at Mures seafood restaurant on the wharf for dinner at 4.30 lol!
After dinner we went and saw Michael Jackson, This Is It. Great but sad for MJ and sad for what could have been an awesome concert.
After the movie we thought we’d drive round Hobart a bit more and found a restaurant strip in north Hobart. We the headed back down to the water to check out wrest point casino. Nothing much exciting there but awesome views back over the bay and mountains at night.
